Canada announces additional $130 million for Inuit-led housing
On October 30, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada announced an additional $130 million for Inuit Treaty Organizations through the Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy. The government says this brings the allocation to approximately $327.8 million. Funding can support new housing, repairs, transitional housing, rent subsidies and other Inuit-led priorities. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed welcomed direct investment in rights-holding organizations.
Education and context: Housing affects health and well-being. The TRC's health-related Calls #18 and #19 provide broader context, but this housing announcement is not direct evidence that those Calls have been fulfilled.
Accountability: Which projects will be funded, how many homes will be delivered or repaired, and how will Inuit organizations report outcomes? Announced funding should not be confused with completed housing.
