Kuujjuaq secures $1 million federal contribution for local food production

Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions announced a $1 million non-repayable contribution to the Northern Village of Kuujjuaq on October 30, 2026. The community-led greenhouse project is intended to expand local food production through a new building connected to an existing greenhouse, equipment for food preservation, and space for harvest processing and fresh-food growing workshops.

Education: The federal announcement identifies climate, transportation and infrastructure as obstacles to food security in northern communities. Access to fresh food matters for health and community well-being. TRC Calls #19 and #20 concern measurable Indigenous health gaps and distinct Inuit health needs; that is a broader editorial connection, not evidence that this food project implements or completes either Call.

Accountability: When will the facility and equipment be operating? Will the community report the amount of food grown, availability to residents and long-term operating costs? The announcement describes planned capacity, not measured changes in food access.
