Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre receives $1.042 million commitment for educational trails
On October 29, 2026, the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia announced funding for three accessible educational trails at the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre in Debert, Nova Scotia. The federal contribution is $942,000 through the Active Transportation Fund, with $100,000 from the province. The announcement coincided with an event marking the start of construction on the cultural centre.
The trails are intended to support learning about Mi’kmaw heritage, with places to rest and reflect. Centre executive director Tim Bernard said Elders, Survivors and communities have worked toward the centre for more than twenty years. Federal trail funding remains conditional on signing a contribution agreement.
TRC context: Call #21 addresses sustainable funding for Indigenous healing centres; Call #79 concerns heritage and commemoration. These are editorial connections, not a finding that either Call has been completed. A capital funding announcement does not demonstrate ongoing operating support or fulfillment of a national framework.
Accountability: When will the agreement be signed, when will the trails open, and how will maintenance and community-directed programming be supported?
