New Brunswick announces First Nation-operated 60-bed long-term care home near Elsipogtog

On October 29, 2026, the Government of New Brunswick announced plans for the province’s first licensed long-term care home operated by a First Nation. The proposed 60-bed facility is to be located on Graham Road in Five Rivers, near Elsipogtog First Nation, and is intended to provide culturally appropriate care for First Nations seniors and other seniors in the region. The province described 24 beds for people needing help with mobility and daily activities, 24 for people with significant memory loss and higher care needs, and 12 for full-time nursing care. Elsipogtog Chief Arren Sock welcomed the licensing step and described Mi’kmaq language as a foundation of care.

Education: TRC Call #19 asks the federal government, in consultation with Indigenous peoples, to set measurable goals and publish progress on closing Indigenous health gaps, including access to appropriate services. The planned First Nation-operated home is relevant to culturally appropriate care, but the provincial announcement does not establish that Call #19 has been fulfilled. The facility was announced as a future service; the release did not give a verified opening date.

Accountability: When will construction and staffing be completed and the 60 beds become available? How will First Nation leadership shape operations, Mi’kmaq-language services and measures of residents’ access and quality of care? These are questions for follow-up, not allegations of wrongdoing.
