Northern Manitoba training initiative receives $250,000 for surveyor careers
On October 28, 2026, Prairies Economic Development Canada announced $250,000 for the Northern Manitoba Sector Council to develop and deliver a Surveyor Assistant training program. University College of the North's Northern Manitoba Mining Academy in Flin Flon is to provide technical learning, followed by work-integrated experience with mining and industry partners. The announcement says placements have been secured with Alamos Gold, Vale, Hudbay Minerals and Manitoba's Highways department.
Education: The initiative is intended to improve access to skills training and employment for northern and Indigenous residents. TRC Call #7 asks the federal government and Indigenous groups to develop a joint strategy to close education and employment gaps. One training program is relevant context, but it does not demonstrate that a joint national strategy exists or that gaps have closed.
Accountability: How many people will enroll and complete the program? What share of participants identify as Indigenous, if they voluntarily report it? How many secure lasting jobs, and will the outcomes be published without identifying individuals?
