Ontario's 2026 Treaties Recognition Week begins November 1 with public learning events

Ontario’s 2026 Treaties Recognition Week runs from November 1 to 7. The province’s official event listing includes virtual treaty-learning sessions hosted by Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin from November 2 to 6 and a public display of Treaty 13 at the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite in Toronto from November 3 to 6, presented in partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Archives of Ontario and Library and Archives Canada. Ontario says the annual week is intended to improve understanding of treaty rights and relationships.

Education: Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call #62 asks governments, in collaboration with Indigenous peoples, Survivors and educators, to make age-appropriate learning about residential schools, Treaties and Indigenous contributions mandatory in kindergarten through Grade 12. Treaties Recognition Week provides public learning opportunities, but a week of activities does not by itself establish that mandatory curriculum, teacher training or other elements of Call #62 have been implemented.

Accountability: What evidence will Ontario publish on Indigenous-led development of learning resources, school participation, teacher preparation and year-round treaty education? The published events schedule verifies planned activities, not their attendance or educational outcomes.
